1. the diaphragm projects into the thoracic cavity forming a pocketlike outpouching; this congenital anomaly results mainly from failure of muscular tissue from the body wall to contribute to the formation of the diaphragm; there is superior displacement of abdominal viscera into the diaphragmatic outpouching.
