1. any of a variety of stains (Bielschowsky, Gomori silver, impregnation stains) that employ alkaline silver nitrate solutions to stain connective tissue fibers (reticulin, collagen), calcium salt deposits, spirochetes, neurologic tissue, and nucleolar organizer regions.
