1. a condition commonly characterized by hirsutism, obesity, menstrual abnormalities, infertility, insulin resistance, and enlarged ovaries; commonly associated with insulin resistance and thought to reflect excessive androgen secretion of ovarian origin. Women with PCOS are frequently at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and breast cancer.
