Medical-Surgical Nurses Honored At Academy Of Medical-Surgical Nurses ConventionMain Category: Nursing / MidwiferyArticle Date: 08 Oct 2009 The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) recognized individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the association and medical-surgical nursing at its 18th Annual Convention, September 9-14, 2009, in Washington, DC. The Anthony J. Jannetti Award ("Tony" Award) was presented to Margo McCaffery, MS, RN, BC, FAAN, Consultant in the Nursing Care of Patients with Pain, Los Angeles, CA, and a founding member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. This is AMSN's highest honor and was established to honor Anthony J. Jannetti in recognition of his support of nursing and the formation of AMSN. The award recognizes a nurse for extraordinary contributions to health care and nursing through research, education and practice. McCaffery received the award for her efforts in revolutionizing pain care nursing. McCaffery's passion for pain management and teaching shines though in her roles as consultant, educator, author and patient advocate. She has worked with the World Health Organization's Expert Committee on Cancer Pain Relief for 15 years. During that time, she assisted in developing pain management guidelines for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Pain Society, and the World Health Organization. A fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, McCaffery has received many awards for her dedication including the Linda Richards Award from the National League for Nursing, the Nurse Exemplar Award from the American Society for Pain Management Nursing, and the Elizabeth Narcessian Award from the American Pain Society. The President's Award was presented to Janet Burton, MSN, RN, CMSRN, clinical nurse specialist, Columbus Regional Hospital, Columbus, IN. This award recognizes continuous, long-term volunteer involvement in AMSN. Burton has been an active member of AMSN since joining in 1998, serving as secretary of her local chapter, an item writer for the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board, a member of the Education Assessment Task Force, and chair of the Annual Convention Program Planning Committee. Burton is currently chair of the Position Statement Task Force and recently took on the role of editor of MedSurg Matters! newsletter. The Clinical Leadership Award was presented to Elizabeth Rebecca Anderson, RN, CMSRN, assistant director, Community Memorial Health Center, South Hill, VA. This award is given to an individual for outstanding professional achievement and leadership in the medical-surgical clinical setting. Since taking over management of a medical-surgical telemetry unit, Anderson has established a new patient care delivery model which uses patient care facilitators to make rounds with physicians, educate patients and families, and collaborate with clinical support services. Her efforts have decreased patient falls, reduced facility-acquired pressure ulcers, and improved patient satisfaction. She encourages her staff to seek professional development and become certified in their specialty. The Clinical Practice Award was presented to David Q. Matthews, RN, CMSRN, care facilitator, Community Memorial Health Center, South Hill, VA. This award recognizes an AMSN member for outstanding professional achievement and contributions as a medical-surgical staff nurse. In his role as care facilitator, he works directly with patients to develop daily goals and strives to involve both the patient and family in the care plan. Matthews is a consistent team player and seeks opportunities to develop his knowledge and clinical expertise.
