Definitions
1. The radical formed from a pentane, C5H12, by removal of one H. Several isomeric forms exist, the more important being CH3CH2CH2CH2CH2— (amyl or pentyl); (CH3)2CHCH2CH2— (isoamyl or isopentyl); CH3CH2CH2CH(CH)3— and (CH3CH2)2CH— (secondary amyl or pentyl); and CH3CH2C(CH3)2— (tertiary amyl or pentyl).
